This may be an unconference focused mostly on innovative technology in our libraries and learning together, but I also want to throw out two books worth reading and discussing and forming sessions around: In Pursuit of Elegance: Why the Best Ideas Have Something Missing by Matthew Mays (Erica Reynolds at Johnson County Libraries gives a very persuasive booktalk on this one) and The Atlas of New Librarianship by R. David Lankes (Just released in the past two weeks).
Both books have a lot to offer for discussion and thinking about our profession. And as the unconference is about discussing, I think book discussions would be a fantastic use of the time. Even if people don't end up reading the books we'd end up discussing, if enough read them, we could get a conversation started.

For our SWKLS Tech Day our 3 techies (Charlene McGuire, Steve Andrews, and me) along with Heather Braum and Brenda Hough from NEKLS showcased 30 Tech Tips in 30 Minutes. After the session Cindi Hickey and I were chatting over email about it and thought it might be a fun session to have at the 2010 KLA Conference. But maybe have 20 tech tips in an hour more like the lightning rounds were at the Unconference and NEKLS Tech Day? We were thinking of having 20 different people doing 3 minute presos on a favorite technology or a tech tip. Anyone interested in participating in this? If so we'll start doing more planning.

One of the lessons learned by the folks in Minnesota is the value of mentors. After Thursday's meeting, we talked a bit about how we thought the mentors ought to be a consistent resource person for a small group of people that stayed together as a group for the whole program. Heather came up with the excellent distinction between mentor and expert, with the expert being the person who really knew a certain topic and would be the lead person for that particular thing (or twist :) ), but the mentor would be a resource for encouragement, etc. With that definition, I would volunteer to be a mentor, rather than an expert. What do you all think?

Reflecting on Wednesday's discussion I keep coming back to the idea of awareness vs. performing research for patrons. With new developments in technology and increased access (at users' homes and in the library) the role of librarians has shifted from doing the searching (and possibly retrieving the resources) to raising awareness of resources and services. Patrons can search the databases or internet themselves. We are in the position to raise awareness of new services, resources, and especially in the case of the internet resources we can raise awareness of indicators of quality information. While we are moving into this new role there will still be some patrons relying on us to perform services as in the past model so we will need to fill both roles to some extent.
As an example, in a recent class my topic was Google Scholar. I did not need to teach the faculty how to use it (they already knew), but instead my goal was to raise awareness such as about linking to KUMC resources under library links. Essentially I see it as we are empowering users to tackle their own information needs. We can serve as a resource and support to assist with difficult searches but while assisting can continue on in the role of empowering them to build skills for future information needs… and that is exciting. |

I am not sure if the notes from this session have been posted yet—so I created a separate page under discussions.
Since Library Camp Wednesday I have been thinking about the concept that Chris presented about collecting data from various libraries about book displays. I love the idea of collecting data from around the state to develop collective knowledge with the goal of evidence-based decision making. There are many areas where libraries can work together to inform our practices. With the current strained environment basing our decisions on solid evidence can help us best serve our communities. There is a tension between the urge for simplification and producing informative results relevant to the complex environment of libraries. For the project to be successful it must not become too involved for public libraries to reasonably implement. However, with oversimplification we risk methodology design flaws that could invalidate the results. Specifically, I have been struggling with how we could determine if there is a net increase in circulation with a certain book display or a trade off? Is the patron choosing the book on the display instead of one off the shelf or in addition to what they planned? I think this is important in interpreting the results: is a specific type of book display (i.e.: with 5 books) a way to promote a certain collection or a way to increase circulation? Other thoughts??? Or topics where we could come together with other experiments to build evidence for our decision making? I think this is an intriguing topic. I am curious about what others have to say? |
