23 Things for Kansas
Topic: Development of a 23 Things-type program for Kansas
Thanks to Heather for tweeting the notes from the session! Please direct questions about this project to Cindi at
chickey at kslib.info.
Diana viewed the archive of a 23 Things summit sponsored by WebJunction and MaintainIT -what stuck out from summit
was the need for marketing and mentoring.
Want to recruit mentors so that participants will have "human" tech support.
During the summit it was noted that librarians working in smaller libraries had trouble completing 23 things in the
prescribed time frame. What can we do differently in a Kansas program so no pressure?
Baker's Dozen program (AZ) really attractive, doable; but also need to have time frame for structure. Open-ended
with no deadline - momentum gets lost.
Tangible incentives matter in program.
Cindi's personal goal: after end of program have regular session in wimba/opal, to encourage experimentation w/ new
tools, to share the discovery of new tools - maybe something like lightning rounds in the morning session.
Want participants to have an opportunity to get it right personally and let client stuff come last; don't
necessarily make it always that the tools apply to work only. If people understand it personally, then they're
able to better understand how it applies to professional life.
Limiting number of people involved? Handpicking first group?
Want to set context for translating tools in ways to do work in libraries.
Essential to get managers on site, on board with program.
Time always a factor; maybe pitch program as time-saving tools; perception of those in this room is "we" like to
play w/ tools.
Whole point is not the tools themselves; the whole point is coming out of program and being able to use any new
tools; comfort level!
Getting over fear of change!
One incentive already: fits into technology component of admin. certification
Goal: get people to feel comfortable working online.
Exploring aspect is important.
Have people do things using what they enjoy, THEN they can see how they can see how it fits professionally.
Play leads to creatively thinking in a lot of ways.
Allow experimentation and broaden horizons.
More options? Oonly facebook....or options; focus on the competencies (like friending), not the programs. Want to
throw open the doors...but not overwhelm.
Late-adopters claim: "by the time I figure that out there will be something new" -- how to get them involved;
Dealing with the rapid change part of it all too.
Replies to Heather's tweets:
"You did a nice job tweeting the gathering. I enjoyed it. Once they see the value personally you've won & they
apply to all they do; that making it understandable at a personal level is critical." lindawadman

A little late (ok very late), but I know you and Brenda are meeting tomorrow Cindy to go over this. Better late than never. First, I love Patti's ideas of categorizing. Fits in with an over-all idea of concepts, more than a focus on specific tools. With that said from the list,
My List: 1. blogs & rss 2. Twitter/Friendfeed/Plurk (short blasts of info) 3. Facebook/Ning (communities) 4. flickr/picasa/youtube (media sharing) 5. podcasts (audio learning -- iTunesU here?) 6. skype (online chat/webcam/phone calls) 7. Slideshare (presentation hosting) 8. del.icio.us/diggo/stumbleupon/citeulike (social bookmarking) 9. library thing/shelfari (booksharing) 10. jing/animoto (screencasting) 11. google apps: (cloud computing) 12. Interactive Maps (Google/Google Earth -- www.googlelittrips.org ??) 13. Glogster -- I know it's not on the list from the discussion, but I just discovered it on Friday, and it's a very cool site/tool: think digital posterboard!

I think building a good support network for those taking part in the program will be very important. Also getting support and much needed marketing from the regional systems will help convince a lot of people that a program like this has value.
I can guarantee that we can get the word out effectively through the KLA Newsletter. KLA support for a project like this might also be of value.
