Creating ONline Learning Tools -

What do we want to learn?
Look at some.
How do you get faculty/user buy in?

online.ksu.edu - course management system

http://www.lib.k-state.edu/
Resarch Help @ K-State Libaries - Resources for students - http://www.lib.k-state.edu/depts/libinst/researchhelp/
Assignment Planner - http://ksulib.org/ac/ (based Assignment Calculator, U. of Minnesota Libs.,

http://www.lib.umn.edu/help/calculator/)

Library Instruction == citation tools with mouse over illustrations (http://ksulib.org/cb/citeit.php), Watch It! -
videos similar to JING videos -createcd in Captivate

Wake Forest U. Libraries - Z.Smith Reynolds - Toolkit - vids, text, audio - all tagged
(http://zsr.wfu.edu/toolkit/)

KSU Salina - nontraditional students - incorporating a lot of online tools - separate catalog from main campus
post all tutorials and handouts on blog - Tutorial Home page

Handouts for classes posted to the blog (http://ksuslib.typepad.com/blog/library-handouts-homepage.html)

Online tools:
A.N.T.S.: ANimated Tutorial Sharing Project - http://ants.wetpaint.com/ - good place to get ideas

Keith/Washburn shows No Cookies in the Library (Sesame Street) - then have cookies in the library
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJlkplvYdgA)

Where do we have a copyright issues - trying to get permission to use a Seinfeld episode for classe -not making
progress - where is the line for fair use?

Motion Picture License agreement - might look into those.

Use 10% for fair use. Had the discussion in staff meeting a few years ago but now you can view full episodes
online - how does this change things?

Is there a policy on how to give appropriate credit for other institutions training materials? - Creative Commons
licensing could be an alternative. Move more towards Open Source - is helping us move to resources we create that
aren't software. Seek permission.

Check with your own university/school to see if it is appropriate to share resources you have created.

Faculty/User Buy In:
Working with nontraditional faculty/students - example: aviation dept. - science or engineering
Washburn - liaison with faculty - Dean asked him to write notes to all and include a free coupon for coffee with
your librarian - and faculty started calling - 25% return on the cards - effort - individual contact

Creating a flyer or brochure with list of books (resources) that apply to their dept. or curriculum directly

Created customized subject guide - and then shared with faculty - asked for feedback

Printouts of what resources available and attend staff meeting for feedback

Can show online tools - create brochure - get to the people that might not find it anyway

Learning tools development process: general outline; some do storyboards, create PowerPoint with screen shots to
illustrate, if you work from a storyboard - less work on the backend with editing - even with testimonials had to
provide guidance

Use an outline - Camtasia - helps keep the project on track.
