What do we want to get out of a wiki?
Would like to know what is out there. She would like a place to put policies for her students.
Eric G. showed us his wiki and it is in PBWiki. He tracks questions he gets as a technology consultant for the State Library of Kansas.
Eric demonstrated how easy it is to edit a page.
PBWiki
Offers free version and paid versions. Eric uses the free version. His url is kanknowledge.pbwiki.com
Classic and WYSWIG editor options.
You can search wikis by keyword another useful feature.
There is an educational version that allows an educator to create a wiki and then you can add students and create logins for them so they do not need an email. There was a recent update to PBWiki that wants all users to provide an email address. This is similar to wetpaint.com policy.
Only a two people have a wiki.
How are people using wikis?
ESU is using it for a knowledge base. They have a private wiki and pay for the lowest level currently.
Library Camp wiki is on wetpaint.com. Url is
http://librarycampks.wetpaint.com Two people have asked about using this for information for students to find information such as policies. The question arose do we want them to be able to edit pages or comment? Feedback was mixed. Some thought it was good idea others not depending on the content of pages.
Can we use it for a book discussion group? We thought this might be another possible use.
One participant asked about surveys. We clarified the question to asking what classes someone would like to see. Options people threw out were polldaddy.com and doodle.com.
Eric demo’d doodle for us. Also talked went back to polldaddy.com wanted to know how to use it and if we can put in a widget on website. Polldaddy.com provides the widget and code and you just copy and paste.
Art asked about how to get alerts about search hits like when his named appeared on the web. You can do something like this thru Google alerts.
We ended by talking about twitter and its likeness with Facebook. With twitter you can have text messages sent to you instantly when someone you are following updates. You get limited characters up to 140. It is not a chat just brief updates.
